Whirling snow imps and tangoing tea ladies join the
ever-enchanting Sugar Plum Fairy in ballet's Christmas classic,
The Nutcracker. The adventure begins on Christmas morning
when Clara's rat-bag brother clouts her over the head with her
beloved nutcracker doll. Rushed to hospital, she encounters the
fearsome matron whose spoonfuls of medicine blur the line between
reality and make-believe.
Choreographers Gary Harris and Adrian Burnett spin a dreamy
confection of classical dance to Tchaikovsky's sumptuous score.
Kristian Fredrikson's design is a Technicolor vision straight out
of Hollywood's big studio era. "Look out for Royal New Zealand
Ballet. Under its energetic artistic director, Gary Harris, the
company is firmly on the radar and demanding that attention be
paid." - The Australian
