Verge, by New Zealand's Shona McCullagh, has a strong
sense of place. Set to John Ritchie's sparkling Aquarius Suite No 2
for String Quartet, Verge is inspired by New Zealand's South Island
landscape. Playful, youthful and exuberant; the movement style is a
hybrid of ballet and contemporary dance.
The work features both high-energy solos and group work, and a
slow central duet. Auckland-based theatre designer Elizabeth
Whiting is responsible for the work's costumes. With a nod to the
work's title, gossamer fabrics are coloured the green of new
shoots. "Verge the work of Auckland choreographer Shona McCullagh,
was a delightful example of the audience instantly recognising a
New Zealand voice in the highly articulate and beautifully crafted
movement of the dance" - The Dominion Post
