Qi Huan

Qi (pronounced Chee) Huan began his ballet studies in his hometown of Shengyang, in China’s Liaoning Province. While a student at the Beijing Dance Academy in 2000 he reached the finals of the New York International Ballet Competition. From 2003-2004 he taught at the Beijing Dance Academy alongside former Royal New Zealand Ballet Principal Dancer Ou Lu.

Since arriving from China in 2005, Qi has already performed a number of lead roles including the title role in Dracula, the father in The Nutcracker, principal roles in The Sleeping Beauty and Concerto Pas de Deux, Brad in The Wedding and in Giselle: “Qi Huan, who delivers his best work with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, utilized his excellent elevation and great control to convey Albrecht’s youth and impulsiveness.” Last year, he received critical acclaim for his rendition of the Prince in Cinderella. "Qi Huan's Prince shows depth of feeling and commanding power with bravura turns and leaps." Last November, Qi enjoyed the chance to tour his home country of China with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
