Yu Takayama knows how to make a good first impression. She was cast into the national spotlight within weeks of joining the company in 2004, when at short notice she stepped into the lead role of Madame Butterfly. The critics enthused: “Yu Takayama gave us a sublime Butterfly, her feather-like lightness and grace captured the ill-fated geisha perfectly.”
Yu also impressed as Swanilda in Coppelia, and in A Million Kisses to My Skin. In Giselle “she flawlessly embodies the spirit of love conquering all” in the title role. Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Yu has performed a range of soloist and principal roles in a career that has included Zurich Ballet (2003), Tokyo’s New National Theatre (2002-03) and Asami Maki Ballet Company (1993-2000). Last year, Yu received acclaim for her portrayal of Cinderella in Christopher Hampson's version of the fairytale classic. "Takayama masters the considerable challenges of a role that requires character, stamina, unwavering technique and musicality."
