Ideas behind the work.
The word Abhisheka means ‘initiation’ in Sanskrit. It also means ‘anointment’ or ‘to sprinkle or pour’. The choreographer Adrian Burnett set the work to music of the same name by New Zealand composer John Psathas.
“As soon as I heard the music by John Psathas I felt a strong impulse to create a new ballet. The music immediately evoked rich visual images: initiation and the sense of offering within a sacred space. The movement vocabulary endeavours to explore the complex relationships we experience in everyday life- delicate, intimate but sometimes dangerous and violent. I have tried to incorporate the ritualistic essence of the Hindu abhisheka without becoming a slave to its sacred traditions.”
