I created Currently Under Investigation in mid 1999 for the dancers of the Australian Dance Theatre (ADT). At the time of initial rehearsals I was the Artistic Director Designate of ADT but had not yet formally taken up the position.
The title has a double meaning to it. Firstly I made the work as an investigation into the range of technical possibilities that these dancers could offer as well as the investigation of space and the architecture of classical weighted dance with a focus on recto-lineal articulation.
Secondly the title embodied an irony. I felt that I too was 'currently under investigation' as there was much interest in how I would work with the existing company dancers and what direction I would steer the company toward. Interestingly no one at the time, including critics, picked up on this intentional irony.
